Adoption of Quantum Dots in Displays
Adoption of QDs in displays is on the rise! Counterpoint Research recently published double-digit revenue growth in 2024 (Double-digit Growth for Quantum Dot Film & Plate Revenues in 2024 on Increased Adoption). Highlights from the report include:
- 2% YoY revenue growth in the LCD segment – mainly driven by mini-LED
- 38% YoY revenue growth in the OLED Segment – driven by Samsung’s QD colour conversion technology
- 228% YoY revenue growth in the Notebooks segment – driven by Apple and signifying its confidence in QD technology
- Significant YoY growth in Monitors – driven by high-end gaming monitors
The report emphasised that Apple’s adoption of QD displays “solidified quantum dots as the best color conversion solution for high-end MiniLED displays”.
Growth is forecast to continue, with 27.5% revenue growth predicted from QD products in 2025.
Meanwhile, class action lawsuits have been brought against TCL and Hisense for alleged mislabelling of QLED TVs containing negligible amounts of QDs (if any). These low levels of QDs may be implemented to meet RoHS limits on the use of cadmium. As an alternative, Cd-free QD displays can deliver on both image quality and RoHS compliance.
