Nanoco Group PLC

I do really like the workplace environment, activities such as the annual blood drive and the cycle to work scheme are really good benefits. It’s good to be part of an organisation which actively pushes these things and gets people involved.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I come in, get a cup of tea – sit down and plan the day ahead.

Some days will be mainly lab based, working on projects and experimentation, other days I will be doing more desk work, writing up lab reports, putting presentations or patents together. I might also be reading up on the latest literature and research papers.

The lab work I do hugely varies, it might be a collaboration with the team to run synthesis or working on a follow on project on my own on device fabrication with the materials we have created.

What is your favourite part of your job?

I like the creative freedom I have in my role, we have targets but a lot of autonomy over how we get there. I am free to explore my ideas. I can share my ideas with my team and our CTO and I get a chance to pursue these. I’ve noticed coming from a PhD background that at university there was less collaboration, whereas at Nanoco it’s a joint approach, everyone is working towards the same end goals and sharing ideas. It’s great to talk to other teams about what they are working on, everyone is approachable and happy to discuss their ideas or help you to troubleshoot.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?

Nobody has done the research we have done before! This is the forefront of scientific knowledge. You cannot just pick up a book and get the answer, you have to develop pioneering knowledge. If it was easy there wouldn’t be any value in it – it’s challenging but that’s what is exciting about it.

What do you think makes Nanoco a great place to work?

I do really like the workplace environment, activities such as the annual blood drive and the cycle to work scheme are really good benefits. It’s good to be part of an organisation which actively pushes these things and gets people involved.

Where do you see your role going in future?

I have been with the company since January 2019 and I can already see opportunities to progress in future. We envisage expanding the team at some point through obtaining funding and that would open up a leadership path for me.
